Biography

Roberto Fernández Ibáñez was born in Montevideo, on November the 24th 1955. His beginings as an autodidact in photography date from 1985. In 1992 he gets interested in japanese culture, philosophy and art. He begins to write haiku (a style of japanese poem of 17 phonetic syllables), and since then he incorporates it to his photographs, when image and word arise simultaneously. He performed as a private teacher, and gave courses about processing the black and white image for permanence. Roberto Fernández Ibáñez processes his images according to techniques of his own using developers and toners that he specially prepares, and whose application conferes the images the characteristic of uniqueness. He personally designs, edits and binds his own author books (Of Winds and Clouds, The Seasons, The Lonely Man, Cold Sands), which include photographs, haiku and prose. His work is quoted in anthologies such as “Historia de la Fotografía Iberoamericana” (Huelva, España), “Image and Memory: Photography from Latin America 1866 - 1994” (Houston, USA), “Arte Uruguayo y Otros”, “Diccionario de la Cultura Uruguaya” (Montevideo, Uruguay). It has recently been edited in the USA “Orientalismo en el Modernismo Hispanoamericano”, where his work is quoted as a reference of investigation in the field of photography and haiku. A complete series of his authory has recently become part of the Gloucester University's wealth, USA. Teachers of the Yale University, USA, edited a video about his work to use it in assignments on the courses of this institution. Private collections in Brazil, USA and Uruguay possess part of his work. His work has been exhibitied in galleries, universities and museums of Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, USA, Spain and the Netherlands, and on festivals such as the FotoFest, Houston, and Festival de la Luz, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
